Interest in special functions has greatly increased as a result of the extensive development of numerical methods and the growing role of computer simulation. There are two reasons for this trend. In the first place, for many physical processes a mathematical description based on “first principles” leads to differential, integral, or integro—differential equations of rather complex form. Consequently the original problem usually has to be considerably simplified in order to clarify its most important qualitative features and to understand the relative roles played by various factors.
